Oestrous-cycle monitor for small animals
- Basis of the oestrous cycle measurement: During the oestrous of mammalians, changes in the level of sex hormones alter the cellular composition and water content of the vaginal mucus. The altered composition modifies the conductivity of the vaginal mucus, so that the changes can be tracked with a conductivity meter. The device is suitable for measuring all four phases of the oestrous cycle.
- Testing method: The device measures the conductivity of vaginal mucus that can be used to estimate the phase of the animal’s sexual cycle. A
conductivity value between 3.0 and 7.5 kOhm is considered to be the oestrous phase, when the animal is most suitable for mating. The probe is placed in the vagina of the animal, which shows the conductivity value on the display within a few seconds. - Cycle monitor validation: The device developed by our company has been tested in 2021 at the Institute of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy,
University of Szeged, by the research group of Prof. Dr. Róbert Gáspár. The only commercially available Model MK-12 (Muromachi, Japan) oestrous cycle monitor was used as a reference for testing. - Test result: Parallel measurements were performed on 70 female rats with the reference and prototype devices. We found a close correlation between the prototype and reference devices, with all negative (non-oestrous) and positive (oestrous) results confirmed with the reference device. The regression line fitted to the points showed a very strong correlation between the two devices (r2=0.92).
