Testing parasympathetic functions
- Deep breathing test: Determines the heart rate change associated with breathing. The result is the ratio of the shortest RR distance during inhalation to the longest RR distance during exhalation.
- Valsalva-maneuver: The heart rate response to a forced blowing of 40 mmHg for 15 seconds which is used to determine the ratio of the longest RR distance after exhalation and the shortest RR distance during exhalation.
- Heart rate change upon standing up (30/15 ratio): 3 minutes lying down, 5 seconds standing up. The quotient of the RR distance of the 15th cycle and the 30th cycle of the ECG measured at the beginning of the 1-minute standing is determined.
Testing sympathetic functions
- Decrease of blood pressure upon standing up: Standing up after 10 minutes of lying down. Blood pressure measurement takes place 1, 5 and 10 minutes after standing up. A drop in systolic blood pressure of 10 mmHg or less indicates intact innervation. A drop in blood pressure between 11-29 mmHg is the limit value. A blood pressure difference of 30 mmHg or more is considered abnormal.
- Handgrip test: Squeezing with 30% of the maximum strength of the hand muscle for 3 minutes. Before and during the examination, blood pressure measurements take place in every minute. Increase in diastolic blood pressure exceeding 16 mmHg is a standard value. An increase of 11-15 mmHg is a limit value. A diastolic blood pressure increase of 10 mmHg or less is abnormal.
To support the carrying out of parasympathetic/sympathetic tests, the system provides written messages and audible alerts. Automatic test management and data evaluation significantly increases throughput and, as a result, cost-effectiveness.
